The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities

Ghent University has become the latest member to accept the Guild’s invitation to membership. Founded in 1817, the University has been ranked 62nd in the World (and number one in Belgium) in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). The University has pioneered developments in material sciences such as smart textiles, high performing composites, and cutting edge concrete, but also scientific discoveries in plant biotechnology (e.g. pioneering researchers as Van Montagu, Fiers, and Schell) and in medicine (e.g. first lung transplant, world-class research in immunology and cell death). Ghent University further more provides policy advice based on excellent scholarship in areas such as ECTS, human rights, trans-Atlantic trade, EU institutional reform and immigration issues.
Commenting on its membership, Prof. Anne de Paepe, Rector of Ghent University, said: ‘This initiative satisfies a need which was felt by our University and it is with great pleasure that we seize the opportunity to become part of this network. We are looking forward to collaborate to make The Guild a strong and efficient European network and lobby organisation towards the European Institutions.  A lobby organisation that gives its members more visibility, prestige and reputation and functions as a megaphone for our common European R&D&I and Education interests.”
In response, Ole Petter Ottersen, Chair of the Guild, emphasised that ‘we are happy that Ghent University has joined the Guild: as a leading Dutch-speaking university of global distinction, Ghent University will contribute its rich experience of international collaboration, its expertise in Public Affairs regarding research & innovation and education in Europe, and the knowledge produced by its staff and students.’
